As the name implies, they are representative of tiny particles, but rather than explain away microscopic particles suspended in fluid, etc., we'll say it is a fantastic little screensaver with lots of movement and color. A nice little feature for those using a dual monitor setup; the particles will slowly migrate from your primary monitor to the secondary.
