VIA And SiS November Chipset Releases

Chipset designers VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) are both planning to launch several new products next month, hoping to keep the high-season business momentum going after mid-November with more appealing product specifications. For Intel?s Pentium 4 platform, VIA is expected to introduce its new dual-channel DDR-supporting P4X600 discrete chipset as well as two more integrated chipsets, the P4M266A and P4M400. Incorporating the company?s more advanced ?Castle Rock? graphics core, the P4M400 will primarily target the medium-range to high-end market. SiS recently informed clients that it will start releasing its dual-channel DDR product, the SiS655, in November as well. Based on the dual-channel DDR333 standard, the SiS655 is not only able to support dual memory modules, but also allows users to mix modules of different capacity. Asustek Computer has scheduled to launch a SiS655-based motherboard, the P4SDX, next month, featuring Serial ATA and AGP 8x support. As for the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) segment, the two companies also have plans to roll out new chipsets, especially as the life of current K7-platform products has been extended by AMD?s delayed launch of its next-generation K8 processors. However, given that their current KT400 and SiS746 chipsets already feature rather advanced specifications, VIA and SiS are mulling over a proper launch time for their new KT400A and SiS746FX, respectively, to avoid consumers postponing purchases as they wait for newer products.
