When it comes to portable drives, especially "flash drives" some people have a need for speed while others value security above all else. Then there is the third class of people who want it all; they want speed, security, portability AND ease of use that only a flash drive can offer. For this elite clientele, Super Talent has you covered with their SuperCrypt USB 3.0 flash drive. Is this a drive that can really be all things to all people? Read on for my full review.
The Verdict:
The 32GB Super Talent SuperCrypt USB 3.0 flash drive is a marvelous piece of engineering. It really is phenomenally fast, decently secure and is pretty darn easy to use. If you have a need for relatively safe & secure, yet fast storage the Super Talent SuperCrypt is recommended. The only caveat is its large size and the encryption relies on ECB.
The Good:
+ Impressive performance
+ LED indicator is not annoyingly bright
+ LED indicator glows red in USB 2.0 mode and blue when in USB 3.0 mode
+ Hardware based encryption should be good enough for most non-ultra sensitive data
+ Easy to use software
+ Runs fairly cool
The Bad:
- Price
- Short warranty
- Blocks adjacent ports
- Requires USB 3.0 to get the most from it
- So fast your SATA drive is going to be the transfer speed bottleneck
- Turns into paperweight if password is lost
- ST custom drivers need to be downloaded
- Uses AES in Electronic Code Block mode - faster but not anywhere near as secure which really doesn't properly harness power of AES
- Won't be FIPS certified where it uses ECB
- Need to step up to Pro for non ECB security
- No included extension cable
