PC Slot Carz User Instructions

Operating the slot cars program is simple. Starting the PC Slot Carz game will initially show a menu like this: Start The Race!
If you click on "Start the Race" the game will run with whatever settings you used last time, or if this is the first time, will show some dialog boxes to get your preferences for track selection, car selection, whether you want to set up a race with a specific number of laps, or simply practice with no lap limit, and whether to race against the computer. When ready to race, the game prompts you to select a car for each slot, showing the car in a 3D view like this: Pressing the space bar will cycle from one car to the next. Pressing the "Enter" key will select the currently displayed car for use on the indicated slot. There are two slots in the track, and you need to select one car for each slot. If you're racing against the computer, remember the computer always controls the car in slot 0 (left side). You can select the same car for both slots, but if you do so it may be difficult to distinguish which car is yours during a race. Configure Display
Assuming you have a 3-D hardware graphics accelerator, the clicking "Configure Display" will allow you to select the display mode for racing. The example shown below has the first item in the list supporting display in a window. Not all 3-D graphics cards support this option, so if that option does not appear in your dialog box, do not be alarmed. This dialog box will show only display resolutions supported by the selected graphics device, so it is safe to choose any display resolution. However, choosing a higher resolution display mode may reduce performance, or could even cause the program to fail if your 3D graphics hardware does not have enough memory. If this happens, try using the lowest resolution and increasing little by little to find the highest one where it works. You may see another dialog box, as shown below, to select the 3-D rendering device.   You should only see hardware rendering options in this dialog box. If you see software rendering or "RAMP Emulation" it is important that you not select those options. The program will work properly only with hardware rendering. If only one option is available as shown above, the dialog will not appear at all. If you have more than one display card in your PC you will see another dialog box like the one shown below allowing you to select which card to use. The slot car program requires a hardware 3-D accelerator that supports DirectX version 5.0 or later. If you have only one graphics card installed in your computer, this dialog will not appear. Select Track
If you click on "Select Track" you will see a standard file-open dialog box which allows you to specify the track you wish to use. This should show the 25 tracks that came with the game, plus any custom tracks you created using the track editor. Simply select one and click "OK." Set Lap Count
Clicking "Set Lap Count" allows you to specify the number of laps in the race, and whether to race against the computer. Initially the lap count is set to 0, which means there is no lap limit. The maximum number of laps that may be entered in the lap-count field is 99. Any number greater than zero will result in the program executing a countdown sequence before the race begins. If you choose to race against the computer, the car on the left (Slot 0) will be controlled by the computer. The computer starts out by going full-blast around the track. Each time the car flies off the track, the computer makes a mental note of it and slows down a little more before that point. Eventually, at least in most cases, the computer will figure out the track and will never spin out again. However, it has to go through this process for every race. You've got to be pretty good to beat the computer once it figures out the track, so get the best head start you can while it is learning! Some tracks the computer never does quite figure out.   During the countdown sequence the car acceleration keys are disabled. By holding the acceleration keys down during the countdown sequence you can get an even start, because both cars will accelerate at precisely the same moment when the countdown finishes if both acceleration keys are already depressed. To make the cars accelerate, use the shift keys. The left-hand shift key controls the car on slot 0 (left side) unless the computer is controlling it. The right hand shift key controls the car on slot 1 (right side). The cars will accelerate as long as their respective shift keys are held down, up to their maximum speed. The cars will decelerate when the shift keys are released. Racing!
When both cars have been selected the screen will switch to a 3-D view of the track with both cars in the starting position. The default display mode of the program has the screen split into upper and lower windows, each of which keeps one car in view. The upper window keeps the left slot car (slot 0) in view. The lower window keeps the right slot car (slot 1) and view. Pressing the "Home" key will toggle the view between full-screen and split-screen. In full-screen mode the view follows the car in slot 1. This is handy if you're racing against the computer because it gives you a better view. In either full-screen or split-screen mode the viewpoint can be changed. The default viewpoint, which is specified when the track is created, behaves like a camera on a tripod. The camera has zoom capability, and will zoom in on the car as the car gets further away, to avoid having the cars get so far away they are difficult to see. The amount of zoom used by the camera can be adjusted using the function keys. Keys F2 and F3 control the zoom level for slot 0. Keys F6 and F7 control the zoom level for slot 1. Two other viewpoints are supported in split-screen view. One viewpoint is just behind and slightly above the car, and the other simulates being inside the car. The inside-car view does not have a simulated dashboard or steering wheel or any of that. It simply provides and unobstructed view of the track ahead. Function key F1 toggles the viewpoint for slot 0. Function key F8 toggles the viewpoint for slot 1. Free-Fly View
If the full-screen display mode is currently active, slot 1 has an additional viewpoint, which is the free-fly mode. In this mode the cars do not respond to the acceleration keys, but the point of view can be moved around freely under control of the mouse. Pressing the left mouse button will cause the camera to move forward. Pressing the right mouse button will cause the camera to move backward. Holding down the shift key while pressing the mouse button will cause the view point to move faster. Moving the mouse right or left will cause the camera to rotate to the right or left. Moving the mouse forward or back will cause the camera to tilt down or up, respectively. This mode cannot be entered when the display is in split-screen mode, but is handy for getting a good view of the latest cool track you created. Screen Snap-Shot
Pressing the F9 key will cause a snapshot of the current screen to be saved in a file named SnapShot.BMP, in the directory where 3D SlotCars is installed. If you wish to save a snapshot of the game you need to change the name of this file or copy it to a different directory, because each time you press the F9 key any existing snapshot file will be replaced by the new one in the game directory. NOTE: the snapshot function may not work if you are using the game in a window display (works best in full-screen mode.) Miscellaneous
If a car goes around a curve too fast it will fly off the track. After one second car will be automatically placed back on the track at the point where it flew off, but its speed will be reset to 0. The view window for each car has at the bottom a small bar graph, which indicates the relative speed of the car. At the top of each window is a line of text, which indicates the speed of the car, the number of laps completed, and the number of times the car has spun off the track. When racing, and one or both cars have completed the specified number of laps, the acceleration keys will be disabled and the race statistics will be shown on the screen. At this point, or when you're tired of playing, (actually any time) pressing the escape key will return you to the main menu. Pressing the escape key again, or clicking the "Exit" button, will end the program. NOTE: If you race in full-screen mode, when you return to the menu the desktop may be all black, and it may take a while to all be repainted. This is not a cause for alarm, and the desktop can be restored by maximizing any program to full screen and then closing it.
