There is no direct download, so you need this installer to download over 5GB to get started. Oculus software is necessary for all Rift users to set up your hardware correctly to enjoy virtual reality. To download and start the install, you can count on 15 minutes or so. You then have to install the device software and create an account. You can connect with Facebook rather than register. Next up comes 15 or 16 steps to configure and get everything working. While that seems like a lot, it's intuitive and well done. Most of it is plugging in your devices, and the software does a lot of auto testing and confirming that everything is working.
Once completed, you enter a room with a robot to try out a few things, from butterflies landing on your finger to firing a gun. Once you've tried the tests, you're ready to play.
We've got many hours invested in using the Oculus Rift software, and overall it's excellent although a tad overly-simplistic at times. We took an in-depth look at the experience in our review.
Overall, we were happy with the mix of shareware and freeware games, and like everything else, you need to read reviews and determine what you might like. We'd guess that half of the games we downloaded initially are no longer on our computer, so take your time and check into reviews beyond Oculus for the time being. We also found that you can find a lot of games on Steam as well, and the two combined have kept us gaming for countless hours.
