What exactly is the purpose of releasing a new card when most games perform the same (after a certain threshold) and whatever increase in speed you get is only noticeable in "smart" applications that are designed to measure frames for the sole purpose of crowning the next champion. Does it stop us from producing faster cards? No. Do we wait for the games to catch up with the actual hardware? No. But yet, both NVIDIA and ATI continue to unleash their overpriced beasts to the enthusiast community.
