Today we are proud to present a review of one of NEC's latest DVD writers, the ND-4551A. This writer offers 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 8x DVD+R DL, 6x DVD-RW and 6x DVD-R DL writing speeds. Like the NEC ND-4550A, this drive also supports DVD-RAM with read and write speeds of up to 5x.
However, what makes this stand out is its Labelflash capability. Like LightScribe, Labelflash uses the drive's laser to 'burn' the image on the label side of the disc with the disc loaded upside-down in the tray. While this drive requires Labelflash media to write burn an image on the label side, this drive also gives the ability to burn a label using the remaining unused space of the data side, so even without Labelflash media, one can still print a label on the data side of any DVD±R disc, so long as there is sufficient unused space on the disc to create a decent size label.
