Microsoft's Longhorn Set for 04 Release

U.S. software giant Microsoft will release a pilot version of its next-generation Windows software this year, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Known provisionally as "Longhorn," the forthcoming operating system upgrade will replace Windows XP, which debuted in October 2001. As is its practice, Microsoft plans to show partners and developers a pilot version of Longhorn this year, before it puts a final version on the market. Analysts speculate Longhorn won't be available until late 2006, though the company says its release is not "date driven."
