McAfee has decided to enter the free anti-virus market by now offering a light version of McAfee anti-virus.
McAfee has made a smart move by bringing a free, light version of their anti-virus to the market at a time where most of the competition has done so for years. Installation takes only a few minutes, including the full download and does offer to install ?web advisor?. We assumed, and it turned out to be true, that this was McAfee Site Advisor, something we have found inconsistent especially after McAfee had MajorGeeks blocked at one time for no reason at all taking months to resolve. It has a simple, clean interface showing your current status including Real-Time scanning, Firewall, Updates and Subscription. Settings are also very simple at this point with the Real-time scanning and Access protection being your only 2 choices at this time. We can see that 'scan now? is currently blanked out so we expect to see that in future versions. While it seems to run fast, we obviously have no way to tell you how the detection rate is yet. It does use very little memory or CPU but does have 7 background processes running which seems a little extreme to me. One background process leads us to believe this might be called McAfee Cloud Anti-virus in the future.The jury is still out on this one.
