What makes this drive so special to any other current DVD writer on the market is that it can write too dual layer discs as well as single layer discs, what's this I heard you ask; well basically a single layer disc is 4.7GB, a dual layer disc is 8.5GB (also known as DVD+R9), this is a similar idea to the current single layer double sided DVDRs on the market but with out the need to actually flip the disc over to write data on the other side. The writing is done on the underside on the new dual layer (DL) DVD as with normal single layer DVDRs, so still it leaves a protected surface on top.
You can probably realize the main benefit from the extra space, is that you will be able to backup your home DVDs movies with out having to rip any of the extras out, and your home DVD player will play them as normal.
