A short story on The Inquirer just caught my attention. According to them and Intel itself the error five in the "erratum" sheet says that both the 850 and the 860 chipsets have problems with PCI. This limits the PCI transfer rates to 90MB/s when it should be 133MB/s, and so the external PCI disk controller is, to use a technical term we just invented, "blinkered" to rates of around 80MB/s when it's running in the desperationd derby.
