Games have classically been designed as a single, huge event loop. Everything in the game runs in one really long thread. As Windows XP has become the PC gaming platform of choice, multithreading in a PC game has become more attractive. Toss in simultaneous multithreading (SMT), what Intel dubs "Hyper-Threading," and a widespread platform for taking advantage of multithreaded games emerges.
