If you thought add-in sound cards were becoming redundant, think again. Creative just announced a mammoth of a sound card that should put onboard sound to shame. The 51.1 million transistor X-Fi is over ten times larger than Creative's previous Audigy audio processor, and some versions of the X-Fi will even sport 64MB of onboard memory.
The new processor emphasizes playing audio with 24-bit fidelity. From our preliminary testing, we're more than impressed. Just about everything we listened to, especially low bit-rate MP3s, sounded much better. Creative expects to come out with multiple versions of the X-Fi, and will even sell the chip to third party manufacturers.
