Size and performance are always a struggle when it comes to cooling, as is noise. It's a relatively simple thing; larger surface areas are naturally more efficient at dissipating heat, and more efficiency means less need for airflow and the associated noise. However, we are in a wave of smaller form factor popularity that even enthusiast users are going to. While a Noctua NH-D15 may be a top choice for noise/performance these days, it becomes a little difficult to use it when you only have 140mm of clearance in your SFF case. With that we are naturally seeing a rise in the top flow design that had fallen so out of favor the last few years.
