The Athlon 64 platform has been gaining support in the enthusiast sectors, thanks to it high performance in 32-bit applications and the promise of more to come with a full64-bit OS, however the consumer chips have been split across two different platforms. With the move to Dual DDR on the Athlon 64, both this and the higher end Athlon 64 FX are being unified on a single Socket 939 platform. Today Beyond3D takes a look at the performance of the Athlon 64 FX-53 and Athlon 64 3800+ on the new 939 platform. "Apart from the socket, previous Athlon 64's were distinguished from their higher end Athlon 64 FX brethren by virtue of the fact that they only supported a single channel memory bus. With Intel's move to support dual channel DDR memory busses across the majority of their platforms, AMD have now followed suit and supporting dual channel DDR for both the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX, meaning both CPU's can use the same motherboard platform."
