I have an ABIT NF7-S motherboard and I use the onboard 10/100 LAN adapter as most of you probably do. To cut a long story short, I tried my ?super-duper speed up internet tweaks? and that helped a bit but what really did it was a setting on the NIC itself. Those who are running an nVidia NFORCE NIC should check this out and see what it does for you.
