XP Myths - Myths Regarding Windows XP v1.2.7

There is one thing I would say about the disabling Pagefile myth. I have one gig of ram. With a pagefile, when after video editing, I close the editor, there is much nashing and grinding of the harddrive, and then Windows is a bit sluggish for a minute or so afterwards. With NO pagefile, when the editor closes, there is no machination involved, no loss of performance; I just go on to my next item of business.

lets asume this is true and not just a specific problem for you this is a VERY VERY rare case the problems that do start with a too small or no pagefile are much more

Alternatively, given that the Hosts file can be exploited, use a Browser plug-in/extension to do site filtering. There's an adblock style plugin for all major browsers. You can filter out sites with wildcards in that way. Both methods have their own advantages/disadvantages of course. Anyway, the point is - the hosts file is not the only way you can block sites.

You can deny it all you want but the facts are that Hosts files slow down your PC unless you disable DNS Caching, which is NOT recommended. The maker of a Hosts File even admits this. As for you not getting any exploits in your Hosts File has nothing to do with those who do. This is quite common, please check on any popular Anti-Spyware board. Lastly the Myth is sound: "Special AntiSpyware Hosts Files are necessary to prevent Spyware infections" They are simply not necessary. Getting mad doesn't change reality. At least now you know.
