i understand where he's comming from i think, the shader demonstration boxes, the pane glass, reminds you of the walkthrough in the first video footage of hl2's new engine that was shown. i don't think that's actually got anything to do with it though, those are all jsut the things people are looking for in an engine these days so they have to show they can do them.

Well, games wont look like this for another 2-3 years or so... Will probably take a few graphic generations to move forward, and once its available, there are alternative engines that are equally cool. Many of the technologies are already within Doom 3 thou, but currently ID are alone with a game nearby using realtime shadows.

Probably because : a. It was running on nVidia hardware b. It's from a build that appeared before 3Dc was even introduced
