SAPPHIRE Responds to 128-bit Confusion
digitalwanderer
I was reading a couple of threads about some seriously unhappy people who got 128-bit 9800s by mistake and it's good to hear that Saphire is doing this to help fix the problem. (As well as being cool about trade-ins. )

In all honesty, it was a pretty scummy move on the part of Sapphire in the first place to release the card with the 'name' they chose to give it. And now that they've sold thousands of them under the name of 9800Pro, they're changing their stance somewhat and renaming it. Also, it's good to see they're offering an upgrade option, but it'll bypass 90% of the purchasers out there who'll never see that they were conned because they don't visit websites like this.

You're right DW, its a good thing they are willing to step up to remedy this, but I would have to imagine a lot of folks may cast a wary eye before buying another Sapphire card. I have a Sapphire 9800 Pro, luckily mine didn't fall into that catagory. But I would most certainly be concerned about buying another one from them.

...I can't think of any better way for them to handle it at this point and I think it's a good sign that they're willing to do what they say they're going to. I'd be bloody pissed if I got a 9800 with a 128-bit memory controller, I consider the card just plain wrong!

Well awhile back I purchased the Sapphire 9800pro card. Most all of the sites I visited had them listed as ether 256bit or 128bit cards. So there wasn't a problem. There were a few sites I found that did not list the cards in this manner, but I figured with the low price it had to be the 128bit cards. I can see how people might get confused with the same name on the cards and dealers that only want your buck. But then I look at the cards I see people buying at Best Buy and its easy to see most people don't have a clue. Well I got the 256bit Sapphire card but it wouldn't post on the MB I had. So I RMA'ed it and picked up the ASUS FX5900 XT I'm happy with this card and it posted on the first boot. I would be more impressed with Sapphire if they contacted the people that had taken the time to register there cards and informed them of there options.

I recently bought a Saphire Atlantis ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB. Is there a way for me to check if this card is the 128-bit version? Cheers Didn't you read above or is this a joke, Sapphire renamed the 128bit cards Atlantis
