PowerVR Series 5 Is A PixelShader 3.0 VPU

Not surprisingly the PS3 demos wont run on my 9800XT but the deferred shading one will, although the output is very messed up. There are a few other interesting demos on the site.

Didn't think I'd be seeing voxels making a comeback again... :oP Interesting stuff though.. I wonder if PowerVR can steal a lead on ATi and nVidia if they can get a PS/VS 3.0 part out the door first?

"Ha-ha!" (Sorry, couldn't resist...it's been too long since I beat you to posting a story on the front-page of EB. ;) )

Interesting! You've gotten a lot of me TBDR buddies all hot & bothered, this is a great time to be a viddy geek! :D

we still need DX9.1 to use it ;P

I will NEVER buy another PowerVR card after the experiences I went through... I got the very first PowerVR card which was claimed (a lot) to be better than the Voodoo. I ended up buying a voodoo cos the powerVR was a lot slower. Then the second gen of the card was sent to me after I complained heavily and they wanted me to pay for it. Fat chance, it wasnt very good either. Since then I have been given a Kyro II which has been sat fairly useless in my spare PC for nearly a year now, as there are so many games it will not run due to lack of driver support. You thought ATI's drivers used to be bad, these people dont support their own products. Only today has an updated driver been released, a year after my last driver download!! Have yet to try it, cant really be bothered now as I'm about to upgrade and give my 2nd PC a much better card. Simple advice, these people are cowboys, stay well clear.

Dang it, I am getting SO tired of having this BS bandied about like it's real! C'mon Coyote, you know better. :)

"I will NEVER buy another PowerVR card after the experiences I went through..." thats what 90% of people said about ATi 1½ year ago :P

show me a link that shows it is due out soon...

El_Coyote
that may be well.. but that doesnt help us NOW does it? :P

Exactly what i had heard. I understand the situation here is very different to the DX8 to 8.1 situation thats why it wont be DX9.1. At least not yet.

There IS no "Team DX ©" either, M$ calls their dx team their "DX Team". :) I also heard what scyphe and neo-n are saying in regards to dx9. The SDK will be updated, but not the run-time.

Hmm, the Geforce, Geforce2, Geforce3 and Geforce 4 cards cards range from DirectX6 to DirectX8, arent DirectX9, yet they can all play games using Directx9 (maybe a bit slow some of them ;)). How is it that PowerVR are unable to support their older cards, yet NVidia, ATI etc etc all can. I personally will never put my faith in them again. They are not worthy of faithful followers, we have been sold some dud products and those that did work lost support.

i know, its funny how rumour can become fact so quickly on the net. I tend not to believe something until i hear it from a RELIABLE source or until its actually made public by the company or person concerned. DX9.1 is a fact.. dets 50s will fix everything is also fact... cat 3.8s overheat cards, thats a fact as well... Ok i have a new one, HL2 is out monday !!! LOL

"But if you just happen to have the slightest idea about the current graphiccard market you will know that the nv40 and R420 will have PS/VS 3.0 support. But how can you enable this when the the current DX version (9.0b) doesn't expose version 3?" umm r420/nv40 wont be out for a good while - remember how 9700 was out before dx9 runtime, equally ms can release dx9.1 when they damn well please, with or without supporting hardware being out yet. and you can still be a hardware developer and develop for the 9.1 satandard when the runtimes isnt publicly availible yet. i suggest you visit the clue-box and get one.

Half-life2 is out Monday? Really? GREAT! :D

erm read again. You'll see I have a Kyro II and had PowerVR PCX1 and PCX2 before it, thats what we're discussing. Not sure where you base your assumptions from. I am commenting on this as a purchaser and owner of the PowerVR series of cards. Each one has left a bitter taste in my mouth. This taste seems to appeal to some people. I have an 'old' Geforce 2 card and blow me if it isnt still supported! I'd rather buy from a company that supports their products seeing as everybody else does. My machine is stable when it runs the things it is told to. With a Kyro II in your system, thats not what happens. There are things you cant run or have a tough time getting to run. I like enjoying my computing experience :)

Why no DX9.1? Well this is how it was explained to me. DX8 included Ps1.1 to 1.3 , but didnt have any 1.4 in it at all, there was no spec at the time. DX8.1 included PS1.4 which was ratified after DX8 was released. DX9 already includes PS2.0 and PS3.0 but 3.0 is not enabled. Because adding PS3.0 wouldnt add anything new to the standard (its already there) it wont be a major update that why it wont be DX9.1 just DX9.0c or d or whatever. You only get a number change when the spec changes and it isnt changing.
