I like MS bashing as much as the next guy, but: Basically you're saying that bad things can happen if you open a file sent to you by a stranger, and it's a Microsoft bug. Um... no. It's a user defect for opening the thing in the first place.

However, you can be tricked quite easily into going to www.john.com/Free Ram.html or something like that, and it logs you off your windows xp machine.

No software will ever be perfect. It is the nature of the beast. What one man at do, another man will undo. Be good to one another. Peace and love, Hyperspace

IE blows because it has too many damn security holes! Use an alternative browser.

The bug is in allowing the browser to execute system level commands without warning the user.

I agree...this isn't an "IE6 bug", it's the bug of computer illiteracy striking again.

It's not just IE6, it does the same thing on IE5 on NT4, very handy way of accessing the command promt on an account with restricted privelages where you're not supposed to.

Disable ActiveScripting inthe WindowsXP IE Security settings. Beware though that certain websites will look crappy afterwards. Testing by various people on other boards has shown that it doesn't work for many using Windows 2000 and the service packs, Opera, and other browsers that don't ActiveScripting by default. WindowsNT is also safe. You CANNOT use enviroment variables in the script. Using nonstandard sources for your folders also works to protect you. (ex.- F:/windows instead of C:/windows)
