And this information is different than the information that any webserver captures in it's log files in what way? Oh wait, that's right, every webpage I visit is spyware. You guys better quit surfing the web. JESUS!!
Not only that, any article that refers to Microsoft as M$ has got to be top notch reporting. Does anyone have any idea how many families have food on the table nightly because of some direct or indirect relationship to Microsoft or it's products??? Wake the ***** up! Microsoft is a company! Companies are in business to make money! If you weren't making minimum wage you would only dream that a company you start is half as successful as Microsoft.
That would be ok it that were the point of the article: "Removing Alexa software that is persistant in memory and using system resources". However, the main thrust of the article is about the software being removed because it is spyware. There is nothing mentioned in the article about system resources.
Why the heck are you so defensive? It's just an article. Some people actually like their privacy, if you don't want to hear it, don't read it. If you want to kiss M$'s butt, that's your right, but I'd rather be informed.

Folks, calm down! This article was just intended to inform you! And for some reasons some users seem not to believe Alexa is integrated in IE. You're just simply wrong! Proof: Pic added to the article!
Quote from the Alexa website: Alexa's Related Info feature is a built-in service of Internet Explorer 5.0 and above. As you surf, Alexa suggests links that are relevant to the page that you are viewing, instantly providing you with accurate and intelligent results you wouldn't find with typical search engines.

If these people cannot make a living other than dealing in my privacy, then they can starve.
God damn, Look at the CLSID entry first p30pl3s. There is NO Alexa spyware in IE. The only thing that is there is a menu item addon (yes you can make them yourself in a minute or so, too) that loads an IE control (yes an IE control, just like the thing you are probably looking at this webpage with) in the explorer bar container. Obviously, it IS passed the URL of the webpage you are at when you click the button, just like any other website. There is nothing persistent about it and it is not logging every site you visit. If you don't want Alexa to log your fascination with bestiality, just Don't click What's Related while looking at your favorite Yak site. This is no different than going to google and typing in H0t Yak S3xx0r. So CHILL Folks.
Ad-Aware (onlywhen updated with the latest signature file), found and removed this spyware program from my new computer. Do you work for Alexa or Microsoft or are you just stupid and gullible? It is clearly in IE.
Dido here too. I just found and removed alexa from my browser today. I blame Micro$oft for ths---a obvious invasion of privacy. Make sure you use the latest sig file with ad-aware.
Alexa is different and it does not just record the URL of a web page -- it can record and transmit your full entries including your true mailing address and possibly your credit card information when you fill out a web form etc.. etc.. and in many cases the data is transmitted as unencripted text files that can be intercepted! Which is why the FTC is jumping on them! That is the kind of data that many spyware programs can gather, transmit and sell to third parties.
***** you you bloody arse wanker mother***** who the ***** you think you are to talk like that you bloody arse tosser ! Most of us can do without the ***** spywares installed on our system you ***** guzzling ***** arse banger.... :Y :Y :Y - Rimmer66
If you bothered your sorry ass to find out a little bit more about Alexa, you'd also discover it transmits back to its servers, your address, telephone number, credit card details etc. HTH.
>>And this information is different than the information that any webserver captures in it's log files in what way? I'll tell you what way: if a site asks for your personnal address and you give it, you KNOW who you're giving your address to and YOU decided you can do it. If a server systemativally collects ANY information you give to ANY server you visit, then it's quite a different story!
Wow, it's amazing just how dumb seemingly-smart people can be. It just goes to show you that there is a BIG difference between book smarts and street smarts. The skinny: 1) Yes, Alexa is built into Internet Explorer. 2) No, it is not persistent. It doesn't track you across the Internet. It only provides information about a site when the button is clicked. 3) Get rid of it if you want, but why bother? The software is not doing anything until you click the button. 4) There is an upgrade/ full Alexa Toolbar, that DOES actually track page turns. But it comes with an uninstall, so again, don't bother with the registry... just uninstall it. And, no, Alexa is not part of an Alien conspiracy to invade planet earth. There is no boogey man in your closet. And Elvis is dead.
The truly sad thing is that some of these morons don't seem to understand that even if the originators/operators of most spyware WERE as innocent of mal-intent as Mother Theresa it wouldn't make their crap safe. Any hacker with access to any server you go through can scoop up all of your delicates without even needing to crack your system, this stuff is so poorly written.

ALEXA IS NOT PART OF ANY VERSION OF IE

Hope this sorts things out a bit!

Was there a reason?
