Could they meld the beta with the preload to get something together? That would be my first thought.

Doom I & II, Hexen, Heretic, some expansion packs....it was the sh1ts!!!! :D The thought was you could load it encrypted off the disk then call up Id and give them your ID number and they'd give you a special unlock code and you'd have the game....qcrack did the same thing though so basically you could have the entire Id collection on an $7 CD.
