This is easy, the reason Linux still does not appeal to the general user is its lack of uniformity. But, it is also that same thing that appeals to the main Linux user base, customization. The basic user want everthing to be the same. I would assume this situation is why the Mac is becoming more popular.

I don't understand your point. I think Windows is more popular becasue of games, superior support for hardware dedicated to run them and short learning curve. Oh and some people are forced to use Windows, because applications they need don't have ports to other operating systems/cpu architectures. Did I miss anything? Btw I'm die hard linux user ^,^
