64 bit expands the amount of memory that can be addressed and the size of a number that can be stored in memory. It allows for higher precision calculations to be done in less cycles than on 32 bit architecture- say on a 32 bit machine you have to do an operation involving a number higher than 2^32 (about 4 billion). This must be split up into several cycles, thereby using WAY more computing resources to handle the same problem that a 64 bit system can handle all at once. Sure, the 32 bit processor can run the same code, but in some cases, it may take ten times longer to execute. Hence the reason for the 64 bit version to have higher quality special effects.
