Exclusive: Symantec Product Activation Only For North America
Hanners
I guess this means that people will warez the European/non-North American releases and distribute them, and then the whole point of product activiation will be defated. If you're going to do something like this, you have to do it properly.

Somebody will release a "hacked" version of the software on the net. There is no un-breakable software system available, nowhere, period.

Kaspersky looks like a sweet program, many different options to buy, I especially like the idea of having a "lite" version. I love my E-trust but I wish it had as many purchase options as Kapersky does.
apathy
I'll never buy another symantec product ever again or any other product that uses the activation technology, even if it means not ever owning a computer at all, I will simply go without. I buy the majority of all software that I use consistently, activation makes me feel as if the companies I have given money to for their products in the past are now treating me like a criminal and putting me on a level of distrust. As if it is *my* fault that their product gets hacked. And then there are the "other" obvious problems with activation technology, the ones that happen when you upgrade your motherboard or a video card or whatever and the product thinks you are stealing and makes you call the manufacturer to activate it. And if the company curbs piracy by using activation will they lower their prices? Of course not, just look at M$, Gates said that windows activation has helped M$ a great deal by curbing piracy, it hasn't completely stopped it but it definitely has slowed it down quite a bit according to him. So where are the price cuts Billy? You said that M$ products were priced high because of piracy, so now the piracy has allegedly been curbed where are the price cuts at? I suspect symantec will do the same thing...

Windows XP was probably the most pirated version of Windows ever and that was even with the activation (which was flawed). By the time Microsoft fixed the problem in SP1 it was too late. Norton Antivirus already has a form of activation in it anyway. Every time you use Live Update where it says "verifying your subscription", Symantec is checking to see if your software is allowed to get updates or not. BTW I doubt Symantec will be checking your hardware configuration.
