Almost all free download sites are restricted to non registrars, such as fileplanet, gamespot, etc. However they also dont allow you multiple connections, so you have to find multiple mirrors. If you've EVER gotten speeds less than your connections max, chances are a download accelerator would help. Its also nice to be able to pause and resume downloads, and limit bandwidth used. Personal favorite is flashget once all the adware is removed.

100% correct Servers can limit their bandwidth either on purpose, or simply because they have to spread it out evenly to multiple users. Plus its nice to use multiple mirrors, have pause and resume functions, etc. Some people just dont understand how the internet works....
