It always felt too bloated for me and the last time I tried it, it gave me some hard drive trouble. I prefer O&O Defrag Proffesional, quality defragger.

I tried diskeeper and it gave all sorts of weird errors , so I went back to perfectdisk.

i_aM_tHe_AnimaL Have you emailed the Executive Software people about this. I've used Diskeeper on and off for years with no probs whatsoever. Overall though I do think that O&O Defrag does a slightly better job but there again it takes about 5 times longer than Diskeeper.

i personally love diskkeeper. i did give pefectdisk a try, i didnt like the UI at all, and the defrag was slooooow. I did notice that DK9 defaults manual scan to normal priority, once moved up to high or highest, the defrag was very fast. i've used Diskkeeper for a long time, and no probs, the GUI is very nice looking, and the chart and info tabs are great. i found Perfect Disk'sUI reminded me something along the lines of a win95 looking app. Dapple, the errors you got, may have been due to having run another (like nortons) diskutil in conjunction with DK. Generally its a good idea to run only one disk utility and sticking with that. Animal, you may have already had problems, i doubt diskkeeper was soley responsible for destroying your data, contacting diskkeeper with the info may shed some light, who knows.

Caleb Apart from office work I don't understand why anyone would leave background defrag running. Never seen the the point of this with a home system. I game online a lot and don't want an app starting up in the middle of a game. You say you didn't like Diskeeper 8? After trying v9 I am now going back to v8, at least you can set it to a manually started service and it runs ok, with v9 it has to be an automatically running service. For me it takes up too much resources. Oh and before you call people noobs there was a build of v7 which completely trashed your system if you ran a boot defrag, maybe this build of v9 does the same. I dunno but I'm not willing to try it. Sorry I posted about this release now but such is life.

you shouldnt be sorry, it is news after all, and i've had no problem with any aspect of it, and i like it just as much as i liked version 8, i have plenty o' ram to spare, but i set the service to manual, i just start it before i defrag then turn it off after its complete, thus far no probs. the only reason i could see keeping the service active is if you use set it and forget it, or your using the built in data gathering. and i never had a prob with ANY version of DK, i still say if it trashes your system, your driives probably where not set up correctly, or it was the OS that buggered the MFT.

Mmm_Beefy Thanks for your comments. When I said a version of DK trashed my system what I meant was that there was a bad build of version 7 which in some cases could after running a boot time defrag not allow the system to boot. The Diskeeper peeps acknowledged this bug and corrected it within about 2 weeks.
