One possible fix is to completely disable the built-in tools and services. Also, make certain that whatever package you're running, that it doesn't put anything in the Startup folder. This can often times destabilize bootups. Yet another thing is configuration. For example, when you first install Nero, it will try to use the Windows XP Image Handler (the burning tool) as a usable device instead of your CD/RW. If you start Nero while it's configured this way, it can cause Nero (and possibly other stuff) to crash.
