Nvidia nForce Refreshment - High Power GPU's

Published by [PM] 0

Back from CeBIT 2003 Ace's Hardware's Brian Neal fed his readers with some small tidbits of news that uncover that Nvidia will probably refresh their nForce series with a FX 5200 installment and that Nvidia assumes that graphics card's eating up to 120W is what enthusiasts will plug into their systems. I would need a new PSU for such a beast. Incorporating a GF4 Ti engine was almost impossible, because it was too big to be economically feasable. Socketed GPU's on the motherboard where also a nice idea, but impossible due to space constraints, trace lenghts for the memory, and fact MB's usually only have 4 layers, as opposed to the 12(?) layers an FX Ultra requires. Expect 120+W (!) GPUs to appear in the near future. Though nVidia was actively researching SOI and Germanium oxide (?) to reduce power requirements, he didnt expect it any time soon, saying the graphics market changes too fast to warrant that sort of investments for now. So nVidia was concentrating on cooling solution to be able to use that sort of power-hogs.

Barton 3200+ and FSB 400 could launch in April

Published by NewsFactory 0

PEOPLE AT CEBIT reckoned that the AMD 3200+ using the Barton core could launch as early as April. But that's in contradistinction to the latest roadmaps we've seen which have it down for the middle of the year. So either something's gone better than AMD hoped, or possibly Intel's 3.20GHz Pentium 4 is galvanising the roadmaps.

The 3200+ is reckoned to have 512K of level two cache may well work with a 400MHz front side bus, the last stop on the Alpha EV6 station. What will the performance be like? FSB 400 Athlons will be able to compete with a Pentium 4 3.06, but how it will perform against a Prescott at 3.2GHz with 1MB cache is a different matter.

Users Can Tweak Voltage - Fan Speed In New Power Supply

Published by NewsFactory 2

Antec has released a power supply that offers adjustable voltage control for overclocking, while allowing the user to adjust the fan speed threshold for quiet computing. Antec began manufacturing its TrueControl 550 a few weeks ago, according to company executives. The 550-watt power supply can also be purchased from Antec's online store for just under $160. Overclockers tend to tweak the power supplies themselves, opening up the PC chassis and playing with the regulator itself, Liu said. These controls are now accessible via a front panel with analog knobs covering the 3.3-volt, 5-volt, and 12-volt supply voltages. The supply does not offer digital control over the supply voltages, however; adjustments are made using the control knobs.

Intel Prescott Processor Summary

Published by [NT] 0

Intel is fabricating the Prescott on huge 300mm wafers with its cutting edge 90-nanometer (90nm) strained silicon process. The 90nm process enables Intel to pack in more cache into Prescott. Prescott doubles current Pentium 4 cache figures with 16K of L1 and a whopping 1MB of L2 (as a comparison, the current L2 record holder for is AMD's Barton core with only 512K of L2). In order to fit such a large amount of cache into the core, Intel added a 7th copper layer paving the way for >100M transistor counts. Read more @ HW-Extreme
