Recently, we received a tip, some information claiming ATI's drivers exhibited some odd behavior in DOOM 3 and that the company might be compromising image quality for performance. What's more, this problem seemed to be specific to DOOM 3, raising the possibility that ATI was guilty of engaging in an application-specific optimization?a practice the firm has forsworn.

Volari Reactor 1.06.50 Drivers

VolariGamers has laid their hands on the latest XGI beta Reactor driver for Volari, version 1.06.50. Keep in mind that it is a beta driver, so try it at your own risks. No word on what's new! The driver weighs 21,1 Mb and supports the following Windows versions : Win9X, ME, 2000 and XP. The supported boards are the Volari V5 Series, V8 Series, V3XT and Duo Series.

Last week ATI caused a stir in the enthusiast community by releasing a "Doom 3 Hotfix" driver labeled 4.9 BETA for users of Radeon graphics cards which promised increased OpenGL performance for the new game. They also released their official Catalyst 4.8 drivers which promise even more performance increases. These are modified/hacked ATI Catalyst drivers. The drivers have been optimized with two things in mind, better Image Quality and more/stable frames per second when compared to the official Catalyst drivers from ATI!

3DChipset have thrown up a small comparison about Catalyst 4.7 and 4.8. Hope you can find what's improved! All in all, the performance increases are quite small to even bother upgrading. It's better to consider more if this new drivers help you resolving some bugs or other stability issues rather than speed.

ATi releases almost every month a new version of their Catalyst drivers. Often they improve the support for games or fix bugs, sometimes also the speed (unfortunately sometimes the improvements are cheats...). In this comparison we don't want to test the improvements in games or bug fixes, but the increase in speed with the newer versions. Beyond that we also tested the modded drivers Omega, DNA, Forsage, NGO and Unian, but not the beta-versions.

Fido over at The Inquirer reports the next generation Catalyst, possibly based on the 4.9 Catalyst Doom 3 booster, will come on September the second, The driver will have a whole new interface, very aesthetically designed with a side menu that awfully reminds us of Nvidia's.

Just a quick update for you guy's that CATALYST 4.8 drivers should be released today!

Update: from Rage 3D, Just got off of the wire with Terry Makedon, aka CATALYSTmaker, in which it has been noted that ATi will be soon releasing their newest driver suite, CATALYST 4.8! Exact release date has yet to be announced, yet expect them to be ready for downloading early next week.
