ATI Catalyst 7.7 Performance Analysis

Published by Regeneration 0

As we roll into a new financial year we find ourselves again with a new set of catalyst drivers for the month of July. Though this month the Catalyst Performance Analysis is getting a bit of an overhaul. The X1950XTX is going bye-bye along with the X1600XT, in their place we will use the HD2600PRO and HD2600XT. We will also continue to use the HD2900XT as the high-end card, and for a look at last generation we will include the highly popular X1950PRO.

TweakTown has more.

Catalyst 7.4 Vista OpenGL Performance Analysis

Published by Regeneration 0

There is nothing better then getting free performance boosts for our Radeon cards from the monthly Catalyst software updates. Every month we expect to see some new goods from AMD?s finest software department. Sometimes our expectations are too high and we are left somewhat disappointed, and sometimes they manage to rock us all. Last month AMD has released Catalyst 7.4 and claimed that they had boosted its OpenGL performance on Windows Vista. With AMD?s Catalyst 7.5 around the corner, and the hype around R600, we relaxed, sat back and tested the Catalyst 7.4 suite under Microsoft?s new Vista operating system to investigate AMD?s claims. Are they telling the truth? And if it?s true ? is it a pure performance improvement? or something we have to pay for by sacrificing image quality?

Nvidia is launching the 8800 Ultra on May 2nd at a retail price of at least $999 USD but supply will be very low due to yield and pricing related issues. The word on the streets of Taipei tells us that unless Nvidia reduce their 8800 Ultra pricing, you?ll have a hard time actually buying this part.

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX Benchmarked @ DailyTech

Published by Regeneration 0

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX video cards feature 1GB of GDDR4 video memory, besting the GeForce 8800 GTX?s 768MB of GDDR3 video memory. GPU manufacturers often wait to set the exact clock frequencies of bins until just weeks before launch. Our Radeon HD 2900 XTX sample was released to board partners in the second week of April, features memory clocked at 2.02 GHz and a core clock of 750 MHz. Physically, the Radeon HD 2900 XTX core is identical to the Radeon HD 2900 XT core. Both feature 320 stream processors, but the XTX differs by bringing GDDR4 to the package.Despite the reference clock speed differences, DailyTech managed to push the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT up to 845 MHz core and 1.99 GHz memory. Unlike the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT benchmarked yesterday, the HD 2900 XTX is a 12-inch card geared specifically towards OEMs and system integrators.

Overclocking the R600 @ DailyTech

Anh beat me to R600 benchmarks by a few mere hours -- when you snooze, you lose at DailyTech. Needless to say, I feel somewhat compelled to add my benchmarks to the mix as well. The system I'm using is an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800, ASUS P5N32SLI-E with 2x2GB DDR2-800. My tests this morning used the Catalyst 8.361 RC4 driver. The card used was a Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB.

AMD equips the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT with 320 stream processors to take on NVIDIA?s GeForce 8800 GTS, which features 96 stream processors. However, AMD and NVIDIA have taken different approaches towards their unified shader designs. AMD pairs the R600 GPU with 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.65 GHz across an eight-channel, 512-bit memory interface. In comparison, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS features 640MB of 1.6 GHz GDDR3 memory on a 320-bit memory interface.
