I agree with you 100% and just switched my "home" page to Rage3D. I can't stand having ads rammed down my throat and refuse to put up with it. And too, since he switched ISPs this site has been hosed up more often than not. Just not worth coming here any more.

I don't mind the streaming ad too much, but that near full screen ebay ad at the top of all the pages is breaking the search functions and ruining the page layout (not to mention looking completely stupid.)

What makes me laugh is my current home page @ blueyonder.co.uk starts up with a pop for Virgin now, and on the same page is a add for a pop up stopper LOL! and Blueyonder shouldn't even need third party advertisers!

Regarding to the problems which were reported I have decided to remove the ad now until the errors are fixed and everybody can skip the ad and enter the site without problems.

I agree but s not that easy to find the right ad content for anybody. It s a hard fight to get the companies on the site.

Janus is nuts on. If we were seeing COMPUTER related ads (CPUs, RAM, heat sinks, water cooling stuff, etc.) then I wouldn't mind actually SUPPORTING those sites that were being advertised. I already DO support a lot of those sites so I'd be used to seeing the kinds of products they sell.

I live in the U.S. (California) and REALLY have no use for German cell phone service. We have our own (American) eBay so that's not an issue either. I can't even read or speak German so why would I be interested in ANYTHING that's German (unless it's computer related)? I've bought computer hardware from all over the world and that's my PRIMARY interest and WHY I visit W2S in the FIRST place.

I understand the problems associated with advertising and making a living but unless you've got hard numbers to show a prospective client (like how many hits you get a day from specific parts of the world), you'll always be fighting an uphill battle ... not to mention all the problems this site has had since it switched over to the *new* (but certainly NOT improved) ISP. Whatever you're paying for the service, you're NOT getting your money's worth.

I really appriciated your statement and you are correct with all you said. What advertisers need and us also, is the knowledge about our targeting group. The targeting group is the way to get serious and good ads, for us and you in a way we all can life with it.

About the german ads, i can tell you why they are placed and i can understand why u say: Hey man, why are u placing them, I am american:

At first, we have a lot of german visitors on the site, more than 30 % of the whole visitors are german, so it makes sence to place ads here.

And american ads looking like this : Webhosting for PowWeb, Bonazi Buddy, Gator, Weather Cast, Icon stuff. And especially the Bpnazi, Gator and all the other awful and spying shit or where people are asked to install a plugin to get the service, are not allowed to be placed here.

That s the rule we have written on our banners and that s the way we are going. And in my opinion one full screen ad (without errors and loops, i agree) is much better than gator, weathercast and other active X plugins. nobody knows what they are doing.

I think I speak for everyone when I express appreciation for not stooping to the level of spyware (at least, not anymore...i know i've had activex popups from here in the past...on that note, I recommend for everyone that they use SpyBot S&D's immunize feature which keeps them from ever coming up)

In any event, I realize that, being a german site, many of your visitors are german. In any event, I filled out the survey a while ago (when it was first posted, I think), and just for the hell of it, I did it again today. Filling out the survey's probably the best way to get better ads (or will at least help towards that end).


Unless all of you want german ebay ads, in which case knock yourself out.

Not to beat this topic into the ground, but I honestly feel that since the vast majority of information provided by W2S is geared toward the computer "enthusiast" (geeks like us), the best ads would be hardware (and maybe a few software) related.

That's why I come here in the first place --- to find out what's NEW and COOL in the hardware (as well as software) "world". Where most other sites only update their information once a day (if that) and rarely on weekends, W2S is constantly being updated with the latest info on everything out there. I get links to download software directly (and it's the driver related stuff I'm MOST interested in) and links to reviews on the latest hardware. I can find it all right here ... with the notable exception of links to sites that SELL the hardware I'm interested in. That's the only missing link on this web site.

Since most of what I'm interested in is hardware (and driver) related, and I think W2S is THE best site for getting information on those subjects, it just seems (to me) a natural match for hardware vendors to WANT to advertise here. If they DON'T know what a great resource this web site is, they need to be educated ... and that's what the survey is all about. THEN they'll want to advertise here and as long as the ads are not full-page spreads that annoy the hell out of ALL of us, I don't have any problem at all with ads that point to hardware vendors sites that provide us with quality components at good prices.

And THAT would be the best of all possible worlds.

i actually did do the survey a while back, and i did click the swg strategies banner one time, but what they're trying to sell is just exploits, and im not interrested in ruining the fun in the game.
as for german ebay, i dont mind, i dont use ebay anyways, i buy my stuff new and shiny. and german phones? nah! i got sonofon which is danish and does good enough for me :P

I am one of those who clicked 15+ visits each day ... do I have W2S as start page ??? no ... so why do you complain about ads when setting W2S as homepage ... thats st**** ... put it the first favorite link and done ... visit when you want to visit and not when you start IE .... that really st****

so you got no problem with those ads..... only when you really visit site you get the ads and that is normal .... you get them on any site

Actually, i don't mind about the web site's adds at all, i perfertly understand that bandwith isn't free and it cost money. However, i personally find rather annoying the pop-ups adds. Luckly, my Northon Internet Sec software has taken care of it already. :beer:
