What to buy ?
Right I have just been given 475 euros. . . enough for an FX, a 9700 pro, or a 9800 pro maybe. . . so which to get ? I hear the FX beats a 9700.. . but only narrowly.

Right I have just been given 475 euros...enough for an FX, a 9700 pro, or a 9800 pro maybe...so which to get ?
I hear the FX beats a 9700... but only narrowly.
Then I hear the 9800 crushes the FX.
And I also hear a 9700 can be modded to "be" a 9800 with a few overclocks.
So I'm about to buy a 9700 Pro and I want to know if :
1. Its the right choice.
2. Will I need lots of cooling to get the nice overclocks ?
In case it matters, what is the best manufacturer to get it from ?

I recently bought both the Geforce fx 5800 ultra, and the Ati Radeon 9800 pro, both are seated in identical computers.
one is for my little bro and one was for me.
when I buy something, its always the best I can get at the time (since I rarely upgrade, I want the stuff I do buy to be powerful for a while)
they both run on a p4 1.6ghz 512mb sdram
the cards I had in the systems before were both "geforce 2 200mx (64mb)*
and while I found at least 11 sites (3 of which I trust) citing the 9800 crushing the fx, (hell the fx only barely competes with the 9700), my bro still wanted the new nvidia, so I said coo.
ok in direct comparison the ati card beat out the fx in 3dmark 03 by a good 2000 points (thats a shite site more)
it beats it in fps in Battlefield 1942 by 10-20fps
the Ati can run EVERY game I throw at it, in full detail 1280x1024 (full scene aa x 6)
I mean it amazes me, everything from the texture clarity to the power this card has with its drivers at 3.2 amazes me, Im officially an ati fanboy now.
people have had problems with the ati though (the fx seems a little more stable, but its just the drivers, the card itself is so clunky, sure it runs ok, but for the money and the feature the 9800 pro beats it hands down)
did I mention the ultra takes up an extra pci slot? eesh what a pile lol

Pros:
Nvidia: Very reliable, very stable, runs smoothly.
Ati: Very powerful, easy install, runs smoothly, and is quite (silent card)
cons:
Nvidia: Noisy noisy noisy, whew. not as powerful in a lot of areas such as texture clarity vs performance. biggest con? it was a let-down, I was an nvidia fanboy after all.
Ati: Stability issues like fps dropout in Half-life engined games and crashes. Flickering in winxp... other minor things that will be fixed in next catalyst.

in conlusion
if your running a crap rig like me, and are going to rely on the card
get a radeon, it will take you from 640x480 at 10fps in Battlefield 1942, to ~100-150fsp at 1280x1024 full gfx.
if you intend to play half life based games and cant stand waiting for the next cat update (or just playing in D3d - that fixes the problems btw)
or you have the extra Pci slot, the sound of a hurricane soothes you, slap in the geforce 5800 ultra

Well, I would never throw my money on nVIDIA, asscracks as they are.
You can't mod it into a real 9800, just unlock a few features, like "Smoothvision 2.1".
My thoughts is that Radeon 9700PRO is a good buy.
I don't know if you need lots of cooling, I have overclocked from 325/310 to 355/330 without any extra. I got another topic with tips on how to overclock it and so on, not many replies though...
nVIDIA is also a good one. ATI Radeon 9700 pro is better than nVIDIA. I think that GeForce FX 5900 Ultra will beat ATI. I hate ATI, nVIDIA is the best.
Nvidia have one advantage, you can be absolutely sure every single one of the cards you buy from them are fully working cards with excellent drivers.
Whether you have enough computer knowledge to make ATi work well is another matter. I spent 2 weeks getting used to my 9700...

I would suggest that GeForce FX would be better than ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. If you just overclock ATI Radeon 9700 pro you can get it like ATI Radeon 9800 pro. If you want to buy ATI Radeon 9700 pro. GeForce FX is much better than ATI Radeon 9700 pro.
Are you sure what you are talking about? You can't compare "GeForceFX" to a Radeon 9700, there are many diffrent versions of GeForceFX, 5200, 5600, 5900. the 5200 doesn't stand a chance against 9700PRO since it's a MX version of the FX series. And you can't get a Radeon 9700 into a 9800 by overclocking it.
nVIDIA is also a good one. ATI Radeon 9700 pro is better than nVIDIA. I think that GeForce FX 5900 Ultra will beat ATI. I hate ATI, nVIDIA is the best.
