What to buy ?
Right I have just been given 475 euros. . . enough for an FX, a 9700 pro, or a 9800 pro maybe. . . so which to get ? I hear the FX beats a 9700.. . but only narrowly.

I hear the FX beats a 9700... but only narrowly.
Then I hear the 9800 crushes the FX.
And I also hear a 9700 can be modded to "be" a 9800 with a few overclocks.
So I'm about to buy a 9700 Pro and I want to know if :
1. Its the right choice.
2. Will I need lots of cooling to get the nice overclocks ?
In case it matters, what is the best manufacturer to get it from ?
I know Connect 3D and Hercules are selling them but who else (And which is the best )

Well, I would never throw my money on nVIDIA, asscracks as they are.
You can't mod it into a real 9800, just unlock a few features, like "Smoothvision 2.1".
My thoughts is that Radeon 9700PRO is a good buy.
I don't know if you need lots of cooling, I have overclocked from 325/310 to 355/330 without any extra. I got another topic with tips on how to overclock it and so on, not many replies though...

Ricos on crank!
I just like nvidia better, my bias towards all other ones I guess, your not gonna get 1 straight answer in here my friend

Wait for the nv35 definitely. Otherwise you'll be stuck with a FX that
will be called the loser edition.
The nv35 will be much better and crush the 9800 pro.
Also most likely it won't feature that super loud cooling that the
FX has.
As for nvidia normally, i always liked their products better because
they gave me less errors and such.

Well I've got till tomorrow to decide...9700 Pro it is I guess
But I'm worried. Will the fact my motherboard only has 4x AGP make the Radeon perform badly ?

nv35 is still vaporware...
it all depends on what kind of card you have now... if you have a gforce4200 128mb or better then just wait it out till DOOM 3 comes out then get the best one... i cant believe the dumb asses buy $400 DX9 video cards when they have no games that use them and can have only demos to watch....(although the nude fairy crack would be cool to see :D
Get a R9700pro (unless you find a 9800 cheap enough to afford it)
If you wait, you'll never get anything. There will *always* be something better "coming soon" just get what you need to play current + some future games and go for it.
4x agp will have no effect on the 9700pro/9800's speed, most tests of 8x show little if any speed increase at all, even compared to 2x agp there isnt much difference, and a radeon with 128mb+ onboard memory dosn't need the full agp bandwidth anyway.
The current FX's are pieces of noisy over heating crap, unless you really want to wait, Radeon's are the only high-end solution at the moment. :D

You guys say that the NV35 will beat radeon 9800, of course it will, but then radeon will have another card under development that will beat NV35, you guys are going to wait forever, technology won't stop to let you catch up
well its not always waiting to catch up, the NV30 is disapointing and i will go for the NV35 cos it will appear when im due for my yearly card upgrade and i perssonally prefer Nvidia.
as for the next ATI card... well there scaling back to 2 year product cycles and neither company will survive if they keep on with trying to bring out new chips every 6 months!

The choice is clearly between the 9700pro or the 9800pro. I cant believe so many people are hoodwinked into believing nvidia rules. It doesn't. I was at nVidia forums ridiculing them about the hairdryer which was seriously lacking i9n the memory department and all they did was agree.
I would take the 9700pro, there are going to be better variants of the 9800pro before r400 on 013u process. Like the version with 256Mb DDRII.
Understand that even though the 9700pro and 9800pro have THE same memory that the 9800pro by default is clocked higher than most regular 9700pro will go, heatsinks don't do jack. Its all about ambient temperatures. Trust me I have six case fanz (none with the poxy flashing LEDs though I am proud to say)! There are 9700pros whose memory is good but they are few and far between (unless the newer 9700pros are getting better memory batches).
Also the core is clearly not as fast as the 9800 pro, but the card if I'm not mistaken costs just over half the price of the 9800pro. If you read reviews of the 9800pro its always said that there is not much point in upgrading from 9700pro to 9800pro.
Maybe get a 9700pro + nforce2 (nfs-s version 2) + twinmos with winbond pc3200 cheap fast memory,
I think its quite stuipd to even consider these new cards, from all the reviews i've read on them, they are not considrably faster then a geforce 4 ti4600, witch can be had for 150$ in some places.
The cards ARE faster with AA and Ani enabled, but not overly so. the radeon series completly cheats with its adaptive ani mode, that can't be disabled, and the geforce fx, also cheats unless its set to aplication mode. (so does any nvcard). Unless You JUS have to run at 1600*1200 with 4x AA and 8x Ani (witch would be really still to slow for most new games, great on older titles) jus get a geforce 4 to tide you over till something decent is released. I right now have little over 2k+ saved for my next main computer but, NOTHING and i mean nothing is fast enough for me to warrent an upgrade, cpu OR Vcards. And i jus reccomend not jumping the gun, and get a card thats way over priced for its performance rate.

I agree with Raistlin, my Ti4200 gives me a pretty decent benchmark for a £123 card and is fine for now by me

Well I absolutely need the fastest card I can get because I have no PC otherwise. I have - had - 475 euros to spend and those are the last 475 euros I'm going to be getting for months and months. So I just ordered a 9700 Pro and, the card that burnt in my PC was a ti4200. Buying the same card is pointless.
At last someone who actually understands why I bought it :D
