I am upgrading from an MSI K7T Pro2-A mainboard to an MSI KT3 Ultra and 512MB of XtremeDDR PC2700. My current specs are:

512MB PC133 SDRAM
AMD Athlon 1.1GHz Thunderbird
VisionTek Xtasy GeForce 4 Ti 4600

My main question is: Should I keep the T-bird or go for an AthlonXP?
My second question is: If I keep the T-bird, what are the optimal BIOS setttings for the mainboard to maximize the performance of my PC. As of now, my PC is suffering from poor performance, as well as turning off during games (this i believe to be a cooling issue), and I believe the upgrade will help alot. Please let me know your opinions.

OP
Another note:
I have Windows XP Home. If I do all this upgrading, will it screw up windows bad/confuse the OS into thinking its a new PC and making me re-activate XP? Which I would have to call MS to give more $$$ to do.

If you upgrade, reformat your hard drive and reload windows XP immediately after installation.

Don't think it twice, actually you have a very powerfull video card and you MOBO and you CPU are a bottleneck. Your new MOBO and that memory are fast enough to fill you VCard.

It's worth to upgrade to Athlon XP, you should think getting an 2000+ or if you've got money get 2200+ based on TBred core

If you upgrade your CPU go with the most powerfull you can afford.XP 1900 to 2200.Make sure if you get a Tbred core chip
like the 2200 that you have a good copper HSF. AMD says that you should go for an all copper Heatsink because of the smaller die size you need better heat transfer and aluminum
wont cut it anymore.Epox,Asus,Gigabyte and MSI all make great KT 333 boards. Read some reviews, talk to people and then decide what features you want and how much you want to spend.I'm running an Epox 8KHA+ with a 1400 Tbird OC'ed to 1540 with a ThermalTake Volcano 7+ and under load my CPU doesnt get above 47 degrees Centigrade.
