Reinstalling Internet Explorer in XP Pro
This site looks cool, too bad it's only Dutch. But I guess they have a lot of interesting stuff considering you guys got the Comanche 4 scoop from them. .
This topic was started by ThudZ3ro,
A while back there was a post on here about how to reinstall/repair Internet Explorer overriding the "You already have a newer version..." bullsh*t that comes up when trying to reinstall IE and won't let you. I had an overclocking experiment go bad and I somehow hosed Outlook Express and need to reinstall it (Is there a way to fix OE without reinstalling IE?). I'm running XP Pro on the said hosed box. Any suggestions???

I found SP2, installed it and now I'm even more f*cked than before. I'm uninstalling it at the moment. I lost Windows Update and started getting some VERY weird lock-ups and errors. Anybody have any ideas as to getting Outlook Express functioning again? I'm going to eat a handful of Valiums, roll up a huge bomber, flame on and call it a very f'd up evening. Have a "Good One" to all....
If you have a lot of things and don't really want to lose them.
Just do a windows Repair or even try doing at the Start - RUN and type sfc /scannow and see if it replaces the files you need it's worth a shot - You must have your XP disk in when doing this...
For the Repair of XP - just set your computer to boot differently if it already isn't - usuallly Floppy, CD-ROM, HD should be the boot order then with XP CD in when it says hit any key to boot from CD do so...
The next part is fun you go through the Setup but DO NOT DO REPAIR from RECOVERY CONSOLE - Go to SETUP and you should see where you have to hit F8 to Accept Agreement and on the next screen it should say Found OS already on C:Windows etc. what do you want do Press this for that and R for repair hit R and let her go you must have activation key and whatever you do - once up and on get to Windows update before you do anything else and get all updates RE-INSTALLED or you could face getting the BLASTER worm... Once all updates are applied again then you can Activate in Windows and you should be good to go again...
Good Luck.
If it is only Outlook Express still giving you trouble just go to Control Panel and do an Add/Remove and then on left side to Add/Remove Windows Components and uncheck box for Outlook Express then let it do it's thing and go back in and then Re-check box for Outlook Express and it will then Re-install it...
PS. If more seems to be hosed then do the repair or complete re-install of everything as last resort...

For future reference, MS Knowledge Base article 318378 addresses your original problem (how to reinstall MS IE and Outlook).
Now that you've totally hosed up your system, SP2 contains a buggy version (or implimentation) of SVCHOST.EXE that reaks all kinds of havoc. It is a "generic" process that builds a list of services needed to start applications that make calls to Windoze dynamic link libraries (DLLs). It clones a copy of itself every time it is invoked so you'll see multiple instances of it residing in the task manager.
At any rate, the same thing happened to my system when I installed SP2 a while back and I've read numerous posts in forums from others who have experienced the same results (system becomes FUBARed). I believe, but am not positive, that one or more DLLs that SP2 is SUPPOSE to replace with newer versions is simply not happening (for whatever reason). It could also be that whatever SVCHOST.EXE requires to function properly is missing or was not updated properly (during SP2 install). Not wanting to go through that experience again (reinstalling SP2), I can only speculate at this point.
That said, I think it's a bad idea to install alpha/beta software on a functional system (unless you have a good backup), let alone on an already hosed up system. Fortunately, I had a good backup. Live and learn, buddy. Live and learn.

Thanks much for the info fellow Warpers. The system I hosed was not my main box but was my overclocking tesbed. I'm going to just do a complete reinstall and take it from there. I know better than to take chances like that with something I don't want to f*ck-up somethinmg important and have done repair and reinstall more times than I care to remember. Maybe one day I'll just make a Ghost reinstall but I'm too lazy to do it when I should.
As usual, when I need information I come to the smartest people on the Internet and always get very good info from many diverse sources and viewpoints. Thanks again!!!
