Can anyone tell me what is this extra account, and why do i have it?
Also when i installed the update, zonealarm said a couple of applications were connecting to the internet, which I allowed it to do since I assumed it needed to download something extra. Is this true? Im sure microsoft wouldnt be collecting personal data since it says they wont on the update site?

Ooooo me not installing .net 1.1 till I know what its for :P
Well ive been in conversation on the microsoft site and:
This new profile is in order to run ASP.net applications securely, such as Visual Studio.net. If you do not run any of these then you can delete it (although unadvisable) but it can not be dissabled.
.net 1.1 can be uninstalled from the add/remove application for windows if you dont like it, and it installs along-side .net 1.0, so if you uninstall, you will be left with .net 1.0 still intact on the machine.
Just what I was told but hope it helps
