My A7N8X runs like poop
And yes now it's not free anymore but not expensive but xp don't work good with visualstyles on anyway so i don't need this prog anymore
This topic was started by mikek272,
I have a Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mb and it runs like crap, I have an MSI G4 Ti 4400 on it, a brand new AMD 2800+ Barton on it and it only gets just over 12500 points in 3dmark2001se, also I cant even get a steady 125 FPS in Q3A, I have a gig of pc3200 dual channeled. I have the latest bios for the board (1003) the latest detonator drivers. I am at a total loss as to why mine runs so crummy, I am running XP Home. A friend of mine gets almost the same 3D mark scores as me with a 2500+ Barton on an MSI MB and a 64 meg Ti4200 with his vid card overclocked. Did I just get a dud board or are there issues with this board..Im lost, I was all pumped to have a kick *ss pc, and its a sloth. I dont know what to do. I have the ram timings at 5-2-2-2.5T I have tried overclocking my vid card (which I shouldnt have to do to get 125 fps)
Any Advice anyone can give me? Or tips or tricks I should be doing to get this thing to work better?
Here is a link to another post of mine about the same problem and nobody has been able to help me cure it.

My Q3A ran better with an 1800+ on an MSI MB with a gig of pc133 and my Ti4400, I dont understand it

Thats not a bad 3D Mark for a Ti4400.. whos your card maker, what dets are you using?
heres miy 3D mark http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6381263 updated with a bit more tweaking
as you can see its well O/C in all area and my RAM is cheapo generic TwinMOS which O/C a treat at max low latency/CL2 settings.

My video card is an MSI G4 Ti4400, I sometimes overclock it a bit to 300 & 600 on the mem and core speeds, but I used to get 125 in Q3A no prob with my 1800+ and the MSI MB and vid card, thats what bugs me, the board just doesnt seem to run good, my whole computer seems slower actually..It sure doesnt seem any faster with 333fsb and and a barton cpu in it....I have to run a SiSoft Sandra test tonight and see what I get. Yes I have the latest Nforce 2 drivers from the nvidia site also.
You loaded newest BIOS for your Mainboard?
Tweak your BIOS?
Shoulda stayed with MSI man like me,
Check my computer out below, I got 300fps in Q3 when playing on 1024x768, MSI > ASUS

What is 3dmark 2001 like on your system? Like the guy said - if you reinstall the OS it may help. Especially if you dont offen do it. If you don't have stuttering - thats a positive. Or sound crackling in your case.
If I were you - I would reinstall follow the tweak guides on the net, o/c video, cpu run 3dmark2001se and compare scores.

I think those scores are low...
I got a max of 9590 with my rather more modest system :
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6249584
Basically a 1600+XP on a K7S5A with a Geforce4 Ti4200 128MB...
I would hope if I upgraded to that Asus with a fast Barton, I would see more than a 3000 point increase!
Some things I would check would be forcing your antialiasing and ansiostropic filtering off. Also, close ALL of your running programs BEFORE you run the test. My firewall in paticular (sygate) really makes a big diff...what I do is just check off Nature and run that test after closing each program to find which really are interfering...
That would be the first two things I would check if my scores were rather low...
I got 7722 when I first put my new Geforce4 in :

Keep plugging...and make sure to post your findings! Help someone else out maybe.

i get 10k 3dmarks
That's pretty good....but I break 13000 3dmarks on a regular basis...13600 last time. 13900 highest. here's what I reccomend....oh yeah 14200 once using those cheater dets 42.68
-make sure your mem divider is set correctly
-up the agp voltage as high as it will go (1.7 on mine)
-set agp aperature to 128mb
-force aa and af off in display properties
-overclock the hell outa your video card
my pny is made by msi, so pretty much same as yours and it'll
do 310/661 without breaking a sweat, and only cooling is an extra
80mm case fan pointed at the card....100% stable...will run as high
as 319/688 but with a few fragments...I benchmark @ 310/661 since
thats where i leave the card
-see if your mem wont run at 2 instead of 2.5 timings
Are you running xp? if so I reccomend "tweak-xp pro"
Also...go see black viper for XP Service's config @ http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Oh that just brilliant, I ordered a A7N8X Deluxe & Barton 2800 last night, and I have a MSI GF4400. Now it looks like it's gonna be a pile of plop.
Just typical, I should have stuck with ABit.
I will be installing it tomorrow so I'll try 3dMark2001 and let you know the result.
P.S. Notice you can't post anything anywhere without the NVidia vs Radeon kiddies turning up.

Probably nobody looking at this thread any more but,
My results with 3DMark2001 = 12802
Asus A7N8X-2.0 Deluxe + XP2800(Barton)
2 x 512Mb Kingston HyperX DDR400 (running at 333/100%)
MSI GF4-Ti4400
All at optimal/stock speeds.
Have to agree, 3DMark is really limited by GFX card, but I'm still not impressed with this board so far.

There are some things I really like about this board and some things I don't really like.
I don't like the 2-phase power. Even though Asus must have thought it was ok, the graph of the CPU power rail (through MBM and WebTemp) is very scary looking. Compared to my old K7S5A, the CPU voltage control is s**t. Min 1.74 max 1.82...insane...
I don't like how picky the board is when posting. I couldn't take default BIOS settings that run fine at 10.5x133 and drop the multipler to 10.0x133??? What, underclocking the processor stresses the system to the point where it can't boot? This leads to a lot of questions when overclocking...is the problem the memory, the chipset, the BIOS or the CPU? How the f*** am I supposed to be able to tell? ABSURD. I can get 160/160 no problem...but I couldn't go straight to it. I had to step the board up a few Mhz at a time. Why? I think there is a LOT of stuff going on that the board is hiding from me. I think that it is making decisions as to memory settings and other stuff automatically. Some of the BIOS settings seem to describe this, but combinations that don't on the surface seem to change anything have drastic effects on the systems ability to boot.
Asus NEEDS to release a new BIOS. A real BIOS...not this K7S5A bulls***.
I do like how cheap the board was, and how it is 100% stable at default settings, and how easily it allowed me to gain a lot more performance out of my old Palamino.
I do like how the board doesn't have any of the stuff which makes the Deluxe model cost $50 more, stuff that I myself won't be using for a couple years at least. Give me the option to get a bare board or a deluxe board, but don't call the bare board bad because it doesn't have the frills I didn't want
Tuckwit, I think you getting good performance. I got 10502 out of my system (listed below, moderately overclocked). It doesn't come close to your system (except for the video card), and your system soundly trounces it. I wouldn't worry about your stuff.
So, even though I seem pretty angry (sorry for all the swearing) about this board, I feel that I got a very good value. I have a very stable system that I should be able to build on for a few years. I effectively upgraded my XP 1600+ to a 1900+. What more could I ask for from a $75 board?
I rode my K7S5A for a few years (still a damn good board, even if she isnt' the fastest thing in the world). I'll ride my A7N8X-X for a few.

Thanks Garrett,
Perhaps I was a bit unfair. Board is better now I have set the memory in sync with FSB, much more stable. It's growing on me. Glad I got the rev.2.0
Tried BF1942 last night - Much better then the old XP2100+512MbDDR2700, probably mostly because of 1Gb of memory.
But what the hell is going on with NVidia drivers, I installed the 2.45's and although NV say it doesn't use there IDE driver it still installed it. Rolled back to M$ one but I don't like that either driver required more processor utilisation. Prefered the VIA chipset and 4 in 1 drivers.
I know there is a lot more to get from this board once I start tweaking, and a lot of people Increase the FSB and lower then mult without probs.
Early days, i'll let it bed in first, so I know what Stable really is.
Cheers.

BIOS settings are really critical with this board...
You might want to check out this post : http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=101934 (sorry bout it being on a different forum). The BIOS is very picky. That post is just an example of how squirrley the BIOS can be.
Regarding the drivers thing, Asus for some reason made their drivers custom for their boards. I don't think standard nVidia drivers will work on this board.
Good luck,
G
