I have that drive, but the bad one.
Recently there was some news about the new
firmware version being on 80gb platters and
a lot faster. Well i contacted maxtor about it, and
bad news.... Here is what they said:

Thank you for sending your MAXTOR E-mail inquiry.

Hello Yngwie II
There is no firmware update for this drive. To get the performance from the drives with 80 gig platters you would need to get one of these drives. Unless you are able to return the drive to the store under there warranty. Sorry for the troubles.

OP
Janus you got my message hehe.

Osrk it's like this. I bought this drive a while ago.
And when this drive was announced, it had a 60gb platter.
It was supposed to have a 80gb platter, but since maxtor
had bad experience with it they left that out. But a while after
they apparently got better with it, and released a new
version of exactly this drive, (new firmware) using 80gb platter.
That makes the drive significantly faster...
I contacted maxtor to ask if the firmware was downloadable and thus
upgradeable. Well as you can read they say that's not possible,
and you'll have to buy the newer version in the store.
So basically the new firmware is replacing the old ones. Which
is fine for those who haven't bought it yet, but for people like
me it's pure hell and ripoff. Cuz i can't do shit, i can't go 9000 kilometers
back (to holland) and tell them i want it replaced because it has
an old revision....

Ok i hope you get it now

Ok i kept looking around.
And i found a little program that checks if you have the new or the
old version. It's called Speedfan.

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

once installed go to S.M.A.R.T
and select your drive, on the right you see firmware.
If it's this :

YAR41VW0

Then you have the old one like i just discovered i have..
I was frozen when i saw it, it hurt but ok hehe

if you have:

YAR41BW0

Then clap your hands and grab a beer cuz you then have the newest
and fastest one making you own the fastest normal ide drive available.

hehe don't feel bad, if you live in the USA you missed a good sale at compusa, they were selling the 80gig platter drives with 8mb of cache for like $70 very good deal, it's the drive i'm using right now

Damn I also have the old firmware version. Is taking a harddrive back because 'I want a newer version' really acceptable? I think the computer shop would tell you where to go. Lucky and I say that loosly one of my 2x80gig diamond's died so hopefuly the replacement will be the newer model.

I believe that the 120gb drive works on 2 60gb platters. But
correct me if i'm wrong because i have no experience with
120gb drives.

Yeah i hope you're lucky and can return. I plan to
do so myself in the summer. I'll make up a story that it
died in case they won't return it for a newer firmware.

I bought it in holland, amsterdam, in a store called MyCom.

www.mycom.nl

They are kind of expensive though, and they first sold me
the fucking 6Y080LO but thought it was the PO.
So i travel 9000 kilometers and find out in the bios....
Total hell but ok, so a vacation later i return it in with
no problems for a real PO. Now turns out i got the wrong PO

But ok, i'll try again in summer, with some sort of excuse.

BTW 380 views since march 9th, i feel special

can't find drive's detail on the webpages....

seagte's model numbering is far better, tells u the capactiy, type, speed, and the platter loh..

Maxtor fucked up, i'll have to admit it. I doubt they store
will let me return it for a new firmware version. I'm gonna try
to pull some stunt though hehe, say it messed up hehe.

Do as I, always go with seagate or western digital :)

Well my previous drive was Western digital,
and i would have stayed with them if maxtor hadn't
made that impressive hardware. Cuz admit that
if you get the right firmware one, you will have a
really fast harddrive. The drive wasn't that expensive either.
