i'm totally down with my nerves!
since i installed sp4 my monitor randomly flashes (turns to stanby) for a millisecond and goes on again, sometimes it even remains in standby and wont wake up again... then the system seems completely stuck...
when it decides to go on again my cursor sometimes is weird (two half cursors side by side or so).
system seems not overheated and the effect even shows after a complete reinstallation and with a new memory module installed...
another grafic-problem: icons in windows-explorer-tree show a grey background!

had none of that problems with sp3!

system:
p4 2,4 on msi 845pe max with verax p16
aopen ti4200 dvc128 cooled by a zalman zm80a-hp
silent 380w psu
samsung hdd
aopen cdrom and cd/rw
sblive 1024 player
no system fans

drivers:
detonator 44.03

Check resolution, colour depth and most importantly what refresh rate is it running. Maybe your monitor has the facility to display it's refresh rate?

Try using the 30.84 Detonators. They still seem to be the most stable.

OP
doesn't seem to be a matter of the detonators!
worked fine until i installed sp4!
downgrading do sp3 would mean to reinstall w2k again and i allready did that yesterday...

Service Packs may break compatibility. This is the whole reason why I suggested trying 30.84 (what have you got to lose?). In fact, simply reinstalling current drivers may help.

Your problems are obvious video related so this is the first to check. Make absolutely sure you are not using a refresh rate locking utility. If you have one installed then disable it, test, and leave it deactivated if you choose to try reinstalling video drivers.

Another thing to consider and to inform about is if this problem is true for all users. Create a new account and see if the problems remain. This will help isolate whether the problem is user or system wide.

Go into Display Properties-Monitor and choose a lower refresh rate. I only say this because the sort of problems you say your having sound just like SP4 has changed the default refresh rates and your monitor can't quite handle the new ones. Most people compeltely ignore this simple thing.
But i would have thought re-installing Detonators might have reset the refresh rates anyway.
Of course your monitor could just be on its way out.

Just a suggestion.

I have SP4 installed on 2K systems running both ATI 9800 Pro (3.5 Cats)and Nvidia 4600 (44.65's) video cards. They have CRT's and flat-panels running on them at the same time at 1280x1024 with maximum refresh rates (100 and 70hz). I haven't had a single issue with anything with the Service Packs including the beta's. Try uninstalling all video and monitor related drivers and reinstalling them on reboot. JV16 Power Tools works great for removing the drivers and left-overs in the registry. Try a different monitor and video card if possible and see what happens. If it's the card get another one under warranty...

You may want to make a Windows 2000 SP4 slipstream CD if you can. That way, should you choose to reinstall, you will have SP4 from the beginning and be less prone to conflicts. The only drawback is that you are then stuck at SP4 minimum.
