i've had the same issue from time to time. i'm assuming that you're using xp as i've never seen it in w2k or 98/me/95. what i've had to do it reboot in safe mode, log in as admin, go in to C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsHistory and delete everything in the folder and any subfolder it may have created (don't worry about deleting the index.dat or desktop.ini files...windows will recreate these on reboot). also check in the Temp folder to make sure that windows hasn't created another Temporary Internet Files folder (does that sometimes). if it has delete that as well.

did a search, deleted *all* history folders and all content; but the same few sites are *still* appearing.... any other suggestions?

If that does't help, then download X-setup from Xteq.com. It will help you for sure. Ohhhh..... forget to tell i am using mozilla and i can delete every thing easily inclusive of some cookies that store the address in a in a file.

Wait forget to tell you in X-setup, Internet> IE> Other>Auto complete options. Uncheck use auto complete for URL and paths.

Turning Autocomplete off (either by the IE settings or using X-Setup) does indeed stop the unwanted sites appearing. *But* I don't want to turn it off - i would still like to use autocomplete - I just wanted to stop it from showing the unwanted sites. As I mentioned before, pressing 'Clear Forms' in IE>Tools>Internet Options>Content>AutoComplete does not clear the unwanted sites (though it does clear all others) - so it seems that on one, random day, IE has decided to store my autocomplete info elsewhere - so that when I clear the cache now it does not clear those few sites that are, for some reason, stored elsewhere.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

Use wildcard to search the cache.

or the other crazy idea is to restore your system using system restore.
my friend use system restore when he cannot clear the drop down address bar, and it does work.

Patridge, did you remember to set the "Days to keep pages in History" under Internet Options to "0"?

Well anyway, here's a more radical approach to it. It requires you to hack into your registry. Make sure you back-up your registry and export the relevant keys before you start. You can export the registry keys by right-clicking the key and choosing "Export".

First off, locate this registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}InProcServer32

Secondly, highlight "InProcServer32", and go over into the right panel and double-click (Default). Replace the last three letters with three other letters. The letters are:
%SystemRoot%System32shdocvw.dll

Change the above to show:
%SystemRoot%System32shdocvw.old

This will make clearing your IE History much easier and complete. Again, I strongly recommend you export the key somewhere first before starting. Good luck. :)

Its a hidden folder. Force them to appear through Windows Explorer (enable "Show hidden files and folders") and go in and explore! :D
