horrible download speeds with conexant hsf

I used to own a motorola sm56 speakerphone modem, with downloads at 5.4 kbps. For some reason, stupid as it seems  , I replaced it with a conexant softk56 speakerphone, simply because it provides good linux support, while the former stops the same from Redhat 7.

I used to own a motorola sm56 speakerphone modem, with downloads at 5.4 kbps. For some reason, stupid as it seems  , I replaced it with a conexant softk56 speakerphone, simply because it provides good linux support, while the former stops the same from Redhat 7.2 onward. My average download speeds have plummeted to 4.8 kbps
Can anyone help me tweak this thing?

:D

Yes, different modem will connect at different speeds BUT...

Knowing what type of chipset is used on the modem, will help you determine how to set compression settings and what initialisation string should be used for that particular modem.
