Half-Life 2 and ATi...
Well if you go to ATi you will see that its optimised for the latest 9800 PRO. This aside, I wondered about something. If the game is optimised for 9800Pro, wouldn't the 9700Pro (Which, I heard, is the same card with just lower clock speeds) also be counted as one of the better cards to play the game on? Does that ...

Does that mean that ATi will be a better choice than NVidia to play this game?

I dont think its going to matter,
I heard that half-life 2 was built on DX6 technology, and orignially HL2 was supposed to be powered for nvidia GPU's
So really, in the end I think they will turn out too similar,

in the end the real difference metween high-end cards is going to be microsopic, nothing a normal user would notice, the only thing that matters is the colour of your heart... red or sickish green
My card is red,
but its NVIDIA
i was speaking logo colours there...
theres red, black, green and blue cards - and even a purple one i think, so the pcb colours doesnt really matter in the big picture. (my radeon IS red though )
Red PCB cards are nice,
my mobo and vid card are both red,
their pretty together
Yes , HL2 seems to have been optimised for ATI R300 series (more dedicated graphic effects) , so it will be better looking on R300 serie : 9500 , 9700 , 9800 etc ...
If they point the 9800 pro , that's only marketing , they want to sell more 9800 than 9700 or 9500 coz they earn more $$$ on it .
DX6 has nothing to do with it , the game's is a OPENGL stuff at his best , they have worked a lot on the R300 path , to render it better than ARB and other as well . Like Doom III benefits from more Nvidia optimisations for NV30 path .
If you take both architectures R300 and NV30 , they have each their advantages but clearly none of them can be described as better than the other in OpenGL . Only one thing is that the R300 is better thought for DX8 , shaders 1.4 and 2.0 , and DirectX games up to DX9 .

Thanks for answering. Considering that I've quit playing Counter-Strike due to my radeon performing awfully (20fps, compared to the 100 I used to get with an MX440) I'm worried about HL2 :P

Heres my case
Ive since then upgraded the MOBO to a nforce2 and the processor fans a Volcano 9 now, and its cleaner, i cleaned all those damn cables
but its pretty

Actually the 9800 Pro has the F-Buffer and improved pixel and vertex shaders. However I agree that this is only a small marginal difference if at all besides the higher clock speeds.
9900 Pro will be no different. DDRII with higher core and memory clocks but no new hardware features. We will have to wait for R390 (formerly R400) or later to see new hardware gimmicks in the silicon.
Nvidia however certainly has the cutting edge for features with their FX5900 (UltraShadow and floating point 32bit PS).
I would tell that Nvidia would be the best for Half Life 2. Now ATI is the best. When GeForce FX 5900 Ultra comes it would be the best. So I think that Nvidia is the best to play games and to make the graphics really really good. So you just buy any Nvidia graphic cards like GeForce 4 Ti 4800, GeForce 4 Ti 4200 etc.
Yeah buy a GeForce 4 - and watch as you get the worst framerates ever in DX9 games. Nice one.
"Gabe Newell: If you look at the surveys we've done of the hardware our customers have (on Speakeasy.net), there are two companies that dominate - NVIDIA and ATI. We've spent a lot of time working with both companies. Right now for the DX9 generation, ATI is significantly ahead in terms of absolute performance and price/performance. We are working pretty hard with NVIDIA to try to optimize the situation with regards to getting their performance up to snuff. We spend more of our time with ATI working on new features like high-dynamic range rendering (HDR) which is a new technique to create more life-like lighting."
