I was browsing the net yesterday for more stuff to update my computer with, and I noted that my 19" monitor had dropped to $250.
Its a Hyundai, sized as a 17" but with 19" screen, capable of 1940x1440@75hz.

The same day I saw the humongous test at digit-life.com, about ASUS V9900 Ultra AA & Anisotropy Quality, and I wondered "why?".

This is about pushing a graphiccards down to its knees to avoid jagged edges, a graphiccard for way over 4-500$, yet I can sit here and play Morrowind in 1940x1440 on a simple GeForce Ti500 at at least 40-50fps max-quality-everything and dont se any jaggies at all.

So I took a look at ATI's Radeon 9700Pro... It starts at $350, $100 more than my 19". And people buy this, just to reduce it to ash with FSAA?

To even further stretch my point... A monitor is something you buy once in maybee 10 years. A graphiccard is something you update every year.

So why using up all that force on making something blurry, when you can experience crystal sharp edges in 1940x1440 at a higher FPS ?

Thats beyond my knowledge.

I agreed with you jemyM. But I only FSAA in old game such as final fantasy 7and 8 which does not resolution adjustment. The other thing is that some gamers really want to play their game at 85Mhz at least, like me.

It is wisdom indeed. Wisdom that flows far away and returns on the wind of morning.

Ah. Bad console ports. I have used FSAA myself in a pair of thoose, but FSAA in 800x600 doesnt require much horsepower... And you talk about 85hz I guess, and well, maybee youre right. Thats a good point.

$350 for a 9700 Pro????? That is really expensive. You can get them for under $300 now. But back to your statement, it is just a matter of personal preference. Depending on the games you play and the system you have, sometimes you can play with 4xFSAA and 8xAF @ 1600x1200 and get 40-50FPS. Believe me, once you see it that way and play like that, you might think twice about what you've stated. But that's just me.

All I know, is that I would require a much more powerful graphiccard than I have today to be able to play 4xFSAA and 8xAF @ 1600x1200 in 40-50fps, yet I can play 1940x1440 today in 40-50fps...

When I got a much more powerful card, I will likely attempt to play Splinter Cell, STALKER, even D3 at 1940x1440 before attempting to run it with FSAA.

Wish my montiors would last ten years, I seem to have one blow every 2yrs or so. Jus recently i replaced my 17in envision monitor with a max res of 1600*1200 @ 75hz with an NEC multisync 97f 19in with a max res of 1940x1440@ 60hz. Hope this lasts more then 2yrs.....
And morrowind isn't a game you should be using to mesaure the speed of ure comp, its highly cpu bound and runs the almost at the same speed in 640*480 as it does at 1940x1440 like you say. heck i've ran morrowind myself at 1600*1200 consitantly with 8xAni and 2x AA and would get about the same as you would @1940x1440.
I'm running a Geforce 4 ti 4400 on ths rig. have for little over a year.
It all depends on the game, what res you run. 1940x1440 is not a good res for most games tho. 1600*1200 isn't even.

Ten years was a bit overrated on my side, 6 years it is to be honest.
I bought my Nokia 446XPro (my first 19") around 1996-97. At its time, it was the best 19" available at the time, even winning competitions. I wouldnt had reccomended to everyone to grab a 19" back then, since this baby costed me about 1000$ for just a monitor, today, it is another matter.

I can run the monitor at 1940x1440 at 72Hz just fine, and its still working like a charm. However, it have survived five major computer updates during the time. Amiga 4000, p100, p2-350, Ath1200, Ath2100+... Thats more I can say about any other hardware I own.

(The Hyundai mentioned before is connected to my gf's computer.)

My can handle it, but only in 60hz. Besides, I only have 64mb on my gfx card, so I cant reach 32bit anyway

Quake III in that resolution is fun thou.

i use AA with my 9500, i have a LCD that isnt able to run the big resolutions, which makes AA very handy... the reality isnt as rectangular as you insinuate.

When you buy a PC, you inherit your awesome monitor that outlived 2-3 of our old computers.

I have used my 19" since my Amiga 4000. Its getting close to its tenth birthday, and it still rock. My Monitor alone has outlived five or six computers up to now.

Sparing money on the monitor is the worst thing you can do since it is the item that you will use the longest.
