Since I installed directx9 final, I am having a weird problem where my machine fails to begin the shutdown/restart process until at least a minute after I issue the command. It seems as if something is making it hang for a while, but I am unable to figure it out. I have a feeling it may be dx9/officexp related, but cannot confirm. Has anyone else encountered something similar, and if so, how did you fix it?

I've had a similar problem.
After installing DirectX9, when I restart my PC, it freezes on the Bios loading part.
It says the processor speed, then freezes when saying checking NVRAM or something like that.
And I have to pull the plug out of the wall socket, and leave it a while, before it will load up again.
I've not had the problem before installing DX9 and I haven't done anything else to the system.

So far I've had no problems whatsoever with DirectX 9.0 final. No problems with games. No problems with my system stability. Everything is working fine so far. (I installed DX9 the day it came out Dec 19th).
Granted I run a pretty vanilla setup. No overclocking, etc.
Current System Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 1700 @ 1.7 GHz
Intel D850GBCAL
384MB of RDRAM
PNY GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB
(driven by NVIDIA v41.09 WHQL candidate drivers)

No problems so far! Hope this helps.

It sounds like something is occupying your CPU. Open Taskmanager before shutdown and see if you can figure out whats holding up your system during shutdown. Look at active processes and cpu usage. That way you might be able to pinpoint the cause to a specific program.
You have an Athlon. Athlons generate more heat than Pentiums and often are throtteled by the system for cooling. Maybe it takes a while to get out of cooling mode. But that's a longshot... First see if you can find a cause by using Taskmanager.

It sounds like your CPU is overheated or something else hardware related. Maybe faulty RAM. Also check if all your hardware is firmly seated. The fact your PC reboots fine after some rest indicates that something is overheated, overclocked to much, out of place because of heating or corrupted on hardwarelevel. What are your specs?
Maybe DirectX9 has some bugs which cause your systems to be stressed continiously? Check your systemactivities with Taskmanager! On XP systems DirectX is used for all kinds of fancy stuff, it's not only active during gaming. DirectX won't show up in Taskmanager but works under the hood of e.g. Explorer.
