first try a different modem and see if the problem persists, then throw it away and get cable/dsl if available in your area...

Yes try other modem and if it doesn't help, it would probably be your isp.

OP
i tried a usb modem

it connects at 50.6kbps which is faster than my internal one (45.2); however after a few connections the same problem started up

i use tiscali as my isp and there has been no problem like this for me for over a year.

This problem of yours is very tricky. mmm...how about testing your account on the other PC of yours, this is to check if it is the isp problem. If it works correctly, then it would be your operating system in trouble.

 sorry goliath, for misundestanding what you are trying to explain. I thought you can't get online at all, but now i understanding what are you trying to say already.

This might be cause by modem tweaking application, if you have don't some of that tweak, then restore it.

This has nothing to do with your ISP or Modem, it is just the software problem.

Good Luck.

maybe is a worm or something like this...try an antivirus and a good worm remover like Stinger.
