I have a problem trying to start Deus Ex or Unreal Tournament on my computer. The computer screen goes blank when I start either game. I have a 700 mhz, 384 megs of RAM, Geforce 2 MX 400, and Diamond Monster Sound MX300.

There seems to be a problem with the unreal engine running on my computer. Anyone have some suggestions?
Update: I am running Windows XP with SP1, and my NVidia drivers are version 40.41.

Start by running the safe mode for either game. It will redetect your vidcard. You may choose to run in software rendering to see if the game itself is ok before you try Direct3d or OpenGL. (either will work w/that card -- PROVIDED you are not running WinXP w/the original Microsoft driver)
If you are, upgrade your video driver (http://www.nvidia.com) and doube check that your directx is ok. (run dxdiag)

If you search the hardware/software discussion, likely the answer for you is already in there.

I have about the same system, AMD 750MHz (overclocked at 969MHz), 512MB PC133 RAM, ASUS V7100PRO GeForce2 MX-400, SB Live! with Windows XP Professional. But now I got a AMD 1.25GHz CPU and I get on avg around 100 FPS in Unreal Tournament using Detonators 40.41, I got on avg 80 FPS before before the 40.41's. And I only gained about 5 FPS from the CPU upgrade (from 750 Mhz -> 1.25 GHz).
How Do I do it? How to get avg of 100 FPS in UT with a GF2 MX-400?
DirectX and Direct3D SUCKS BIG TIME! I prefer the faster, better graphics and more FPS of OpenGL. Run UT using the OpenGL render. And besure to turn Vsync to Allways Off and run UT in 16bit color. You should see a differance immediately. But for more info and how to setup UT with OpenGL and Setup windows to run OpenGL on NVIDIA based systems, check out my guides on my website:

So safemode and software rendering both failed?
