right...lets start.

The other day i got a GA7-IXE with a AMD 800Mhz CPU to replace my Intel SE440BX-2 with a Intel 400Mhz CPU

i booted up my pc after switching them around and plugging everything in securely.
got into the BIOS fine. checked the settings were right and that was fine.
restarted and continued to boot up OS (Windows XP Pro)

Stopped. Blue Screen Of Death. Error about HDD possibly being corrupt......?
We tried booting from the XP CD but it didn't work. We went back into the BIOS and made all boot devices the Cdrom. Restarted and then it said the CD Rom could not be found and went on to tryu booting from the HDD again. resulting in the BSOD above.

in the end we stuck the SE440BX-2 back in and it booted first time (So the HDD is fine!)

anyone know whats going on and if they can help?

Had you scrubbed your HD and did a clean install of XP on your new setup?

If you dont and wirh a completely different Mobo + CPU your probably just getting conflicts with everything that was set on your HD for the old setup.

I always do a clean install even if i just change the CPU or graphics card.

switching mobo = new install

way too many drivers and small bits and bobs are dependant of the mobo.
though it can work sometimes, but the system gets unstable and slow

no, don't format

people, don't post things you know nothing about
when you change a motherboard windows cannot boot because the harddisk controller has changed. just do an in-place upgrade...no need to reformat, geez

Can Anyone say WPA? No need to reformat as said before. boot from windows xp cd, go through install screens it will give you the option to repair installation choose this and you'll be fine.

not recovery console...just boot from cd, select 'install windows' and install to the same partition you've already got windows on...it'll ask you if you want to repair, and say yes to that
