Biiig problem...

My messed up start bar.

You may need to copy the URL into a new window. What exactly is the problem here? It seems to me that my RAM is shot on the card. Take it back, or is it a problem with the drivers and my ATI 9600 Pro?

Running WinXP on an Athlon XP 2200+ with an MSI KT333 mobo.

Well, doesn't that just figure. I just spent the last 5+ hours writing a 12 page essay on how to uninstall a GeeFarce card (and all it's drivers) and then install an ATi card in it's place (along with all the registry hacks and utilities available to expedite that process). I even uninstalled my 9800 Pro and reinstalled my old Ti-4600 and took screen snapshots throughout the entire process. I even TRIED to break the setup by NOT uninstalling the drivers (both ATi and GeeFarce) before and after installation and that was really the only way I could break my system. Fortunately I had the hindsight to make a backup of my boot partition (using Ghost) so restoring everything back to normal was snap.

However, all that was apparently wasted time and I see no point in posting the information since our little friend here (NIKEMARINE) has decided to take the quick and dirty solution, which is obviously his prerogative. Instant (albeit not TOO instant) gratification seems to be the way of the world these days and who am I to criticize.

If I appear to have a very low threshold of pain for stupidity, it's because I do. Most people my age (folks in their 50s) tend to be that way and I don't think the "mellow stage" occurs until you reach the magic 60th mark. I guess that's when we become a LOT more accepting of others (or maybe just less argumentative) ... which means I have something to look forward to.
:hail:

And with that, I will leave you with this ---

I shall often go wrong through defect of judgment. When right, I shall often be thought wrong by those whose positions will not command a view of the whole ground. I ask your indulgence for my own errors, which will never be intentional, and your support against the errors of others, who may condemn what they would not if seen in all its parts. - Thomas Jefferson

Later.

OP
I feel vaguely insulted... Is he calling me stupid because I fixed my problem, or is he calling you guys stupid for helping me?

It wasn't the uninstallation of the card that was the problem. I surgically removed the damn GeForce. Not a single reg entry left. No files, no drivers. Nothing.

After I formatted, I tried again with the same results. I ghosted back and removed fastwrites, and voila.

Uninstalling wasn't the solution. Nikemarine and the rest helped me very much and I thank them. I don't know if you meant to be as smarmy as you sounded, but it came across a little mean.

I do appreciate the work you put into the guide, and I thank you, but no need to insult, sir. I recommend you submit it to W2S as an article, just make sure you add the fastwrite thingie at the end.

As a sidenote, this Radeon overclocks like crap. I only managed to get it up to 472 and 331 with stock cooling, and I may still be getting slight artifacts. Am I doing something wrong?

If you got ATi's boards then maybe the luck of the draw didn't work for you. If you got a 3rd party one like Sapphire or whichever companies make the 9600's then I don't know what happened...

acetken - glad to hear you got it up and running. lets see some game results asap please:)

Old_Fart you got lucky if you didnt bust your install... period.
as for you wasting your time... you started wasting it when you came down so harshly on KillerKebab like that...

If you dont want all that wasted effort to go to waste on that "essay"
why not put it up on a web page, and submit it to rage3d perhaps they could sticky it on their forum or in their links page.

thats acetken not NIKEMARINE that was having the problem.
nothing like being so high on yourself you cant get names strait eh?

perhaps had you used your posts to help acetken, instead of stepping on a soapbox and badgering Killerkebab, acetken might have been able to avoid the reinstalling of the OS.

god what i wouldnt give for a usenet type killfilter for web forums about now.

So telling him to reinstall his OS as last resort was bad?

No it wasnt a bad idea... its one thats very commonly suggested.
i know it's alot easier for someone new to pc's (or newer) to learn how to install an os first, than it is to trudge through registry and file's they know nothing about.

all to often i've seen people delete something they shouldnt have, and end up doing the reinstall they where trying to avoid so hard.

when you made your comment that set off old_fart, i thought you was just kidding to begin with (about doing the reinstall after changing a card)

now, for something funny.. last night, i pulled my gf4 out and popped in my radeon 9000 pro, to try those new cat 3.8's on.

all went well till i took the radeon out, and reinstalled my gf4...
long story short, one quick format/reinstall later... i'm back up and running. down time total for reinstall and all my apps, and updates hour and a half:)

did i try and save the other install... you bet i did.. but when i reached the 3hour mark, and still no luck.. i knew what choice i had...

cheers killer, dont let him get you down.. just watch the blanket statemens i guess;)
